Revenue Cycle Medical Coder

Revenue Cycle Medical Coder is responsible for supporting the Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) Department by ensuring accurate claims coding and billing review, adhering to best practices, providing coding recommendations, setting policies, and conducting staff training and education. This position reports to the Director of Revenue Cycle.

Essential Duties

  1. Accurate Coding Assignment: Ensure procedural and diagnosis codes are correctly assigned and sequenced according to government and insurance regulations.
  2. Claims Review: Review claims and configurations for compliance with coding guidelines and best practices.
  3. Verification of Billable Services: Examine patient charts, claims, and policies to verify and correct the accuracy of billable services.
  4. Training and Support: Provide training and support to claims team members and practitioners on appropriate billing procedures and coding requirements.
  5. Strategic Protocol Implementation: Recommend and implement strategic protocols for coding reviews and modifications.
  6. Coding Practice Evaluations: Conduct comprehensive evaluations of coding practices.
  7. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Compliance and Contracting.
  8. Stay Updated: Keep up to date on coding requirements and best practices, including attending external trainings and meetings to develop and implement proactive best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  2. Certification: Certification in medical coding and billing.
  3. Experience: 5+ years of experience in a coding and billing position.
  4. EHR Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of NextGen or similar EHR.
  5. Technical Skills: Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft suite, especially Excel.
  6. Interpersonal Skills: Experience interacting with cross-functional partners, external payers, and stakeholders.
  7. Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent collaboration and partnership skills.
  8. Fingerprint Clearance Card: Must have a valid Level 1 Arizona Fingerprint Clearance card or apply for one within 7 working days of assuming the role.
  9. TB Test: Must pass a TB Test.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  1. Work Environment: Primarily works at a remote location or in an office setting.
  2. Physical Requirements: Required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, computers, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to speak, sit, stand, walk, and hear.
